Quote from a Very Smart man

"I don't believe in a law from preventing a man from getting rich.  It would do more harm than good. So, while we do not propose any war on capitalism, we do wish to allow the humblest man any equal  chance to get rich with everyone else."

Abraham Lincoln

The Past is the future

What a difference a decade makes

It's a useful exercise every now and then to push the pause button and reflect on the massive changes that are taking place. No wonder people are on edge. If you said a little over a decade ago: Twitter, Facebook, Linked-In, YouTube, smartphones, Wi-Fi, touch screens, bionic limbs, hybrid cars, drones, Airbnb, Uber, etc, you probably would have had a similar sensation that Thomas Edison experienced  when he was trying to explain the value of the light bulb. Do you care to make projections for the next decade?

Dull is Good

Remember Gordon Gekko in Wall Street when he said: "Greed is Good." In Self-Employment: Dull is good. If you are looking for excitement, go white water rafting.

Follow Your Passion and the Money Will Follow

Wrong

Follow your passion and the money will follow....correct?  We have heard this numerous times throughout our lives.  Sounds like pretty good advice. The only problem is that it is bad advice.  Think of your future customers passions and needs and the money will follow. The passion will leave you very quickly if you are not making a profit.  The key to sustained success is to find a niche and solve a problem.

The Customer Is Always Right...Correct?

WRONG

I am sure you have heard that the customer is always right.  I thought that this was the case early on in my business. I have learned over the years that this is simply not true.  A bad customer can cost you your business.  It almost happened to me. If your gut says something is wrong, trust it.

Are you a Flexibility Person?

Self-Employment

Your prospect for self-employment success will be boosted enormously if you have a flexible personality.  Flexibility is one of my 20 quiz questions.  Your business will be zig zagging all the time.  If you can adapt to the changes, your prospects for success will be allot higher.  For example, at one point of running my business, I was hit with a large print bill that the client ended up not paying. He declared bankruptcy just like our president often does. I had to move from my home into a condo that I bought for my home office. I had to do this to save my business.  Hopefully, you will never have to face such a choice but it could happen.  If you can pivot one way to the next, your success will be enhanced. Take the quiz on this site.

MYTH # 3 The first Step: Write a Business Plan

Wrong: That is the last step

I have often read that the first think a budding entrepreneur should do, is to sit down and write a business plan.  That is incorrect.  This is the last step you should take.  If your business concept has not been vetted, no business plan on the planet will salvage your concept.  Spend the vast majority of time  figuring out a business that will fill a niche and solve a problem. An idea may come to you because of an experience you had  running down a product or service in time of need. There is obviously allot more to running a business than that but it helps enormously to have a concept that people actually need.

Profile of an Entrepreneur

True entreprepreneurs  are always seeking ways to fill a niche and solve a problem. They are not focused on their passion only but their customers passion or needs.
