I believe that an individual  needs 3-4 very powerful personal reasons for seeking self employment. This will help when things get tough and you begin questioning whether it is worthwhile to continue the good fight.  For example, one of the major reasons that pushed me towards self-employment was my view that the 8 to 5---two-week vacation model was lunacy.

I could not visualize myself working in an office environment my entire career. This is not the what but the why. Why was I driven in the direction of self-employment? The what came later and I started out in publishing newspapers.

The 3-4 reasons powerful reasons are self-centered but they serve as your own written constitution as to why you are taking this step.  If you can't come up with at least 3 reasons why you want to  be self-employed on a personal level, I believe you will struggle.
